Operation Photo Rescue: Saving Photos & Memories in the Gulf Coast

| | Comments (0)

I don't cry at Kleenex commercials. I didn't cry during E.T. or most of the other movies that most people cry at. I cry in Fried Green Tomatoes but not when a main character actually dies but when one main character only thinks another main character has died but is in fact sitting on a suitcase looking at where her home used to be. I tell you this so you understand that my crying reflex is a bit skewed and if something moves me to tears it's got to be powerful. Operation Photo Rescue (OPR) moved me to tears. I read the press stories about it and the blog entries of the people who created the project and the people they're trying so hard to help and I cried.

The tag line for OPR is "Insurance doesn’t restore memories – but we do." and that pretty much explains the concept. Volunteers are restoring and salvaging photographs that were damaged by Hurricane Katrina. As the organization grows I think they're going to address situations with other natural disasters but right now it's all still focused on the Gulf Coast.

The work they're doing is wonderful and important. If you're a super Phototoshop wizard, a photographer living near (or capable of visiting) the Gulf Coast or have volunteer and non-profit organization skills please volunteer. If of course you've got cash to donate or are a photography business who would like to make an in-kind donation please contact OPR as well.
